Western Equality and Human Rights Forum

A strategic partnership, the Western Equality and Human Rights Forum (WEHRF) was established in response to the introduction of the Northern Ireland Act 1998, and the Human Rights Act 1998.

It is based on an agreement between the Chief Executives of each of the health and social services (HSS) Trusts in the western area, the Western Health and Social Services Board and the Chief Officer of the Western Health and Social Services Council to a co-ordinated, collaborative approach.

As the equality and human rights agendae are common to each of the HSS organisations in the western area, the benefits of a whole systems approach were recognised. The

foundation of WEHRF is an acknowledgement that by working together, pooling resources, and sharing experience, greater progress can be achieved, ensuring that WEHRF member organisations are better positioned to deliver a co-ordinated, comprehensive and effective Equality and Human Rights Strategy.

The WEHRF brings together senior manager representatives from each of the five member organisations as well as the Equality and Human Rights Co-ordinator, who is a designated staff member for all five organisations. The membership of the WEHRF is well-balanced: two members are heads of departments which perform corporate functions, one is a programme manager in a service department, one is a Director of Personnel, and one is a Business Services Manager. Finally, the Chief Officer of the Western HSS Council is also a member of the WEHRF. Thus, the WEHRF brings together a range of perspectives, a cross-section of management staff across the WEHRF area.

Equality

The Council has a number of obligations under legislation relating to equality, to ensure it treats all persons fairly, and is transparent and open in its dealings with the public.

Freedom Of Information

The most recent development in the area was the introduction of the Freedom of Information Act 2002. Section 19 of the Act places obligations on bodies such as the Council. Click here for our Publication Scheme.
